Building yourself saves money, but not as much as people claim. Here's where pre-builts cut corners and when buying one is the right call.

The internet’s answer is always “build it yourself”. That’s usually right and it’s not always right, and the reasons are more specific than “you save money”.

Where the savings actually come from

A pre-built at the same headline spec is typically 10–20% more than the parts. But the comparison is rarely like-for-like, because the savings come from parts you can’t see on the spec sheet.

The power supply. The most common corner cut. A machine advertised with a strong CPU and GPU very often has an unbranded supply of unknown quality. This is the component that can take the others with it.

The case. Poor airflow costs sustained performance in an Indian summer. Cheap cases with sealed fronts throttle.

The memory configuration. Watch for a single 16GB stick instead of 2×8GB. That’s single channel, and it costs 10–20% of your frame rate — a big saving for the builder, invisible on the spec sheet.

The motherboard. Usually the cheapest board that fits the chip, sometimes with limited upgrade headroom and no M.2 slots to spare.

Cooling. A stock cooler on a chip that needs more.

When you compare a pre-built against a self-build with equivalent quality in those five areas, the price gap narrows a lot.

The questions to ask before buying a pre-built

If a seller can’t answer these, that’s the answer:

  1. Exact PSU make, model and wattage — not “600W”
  2. Is the memory one stick or two?
  3. Exact motherboard model
  4. What cooler?
  5. What’s the warranty on individual components, and who handles the RMA?

That last one is important. Some pre-builts have a single system warranty rather than component warranties, which can be better or much worse depending on the seller’s service.

When a pre-built is the right choice

Genuinely, it sometimes is:

  • You want a single warranty contact. One number to call when something breaks is worth real money to some people.
  • You have no time. A build takes an afternoon plus research.
  • You’re nervous about assembly. That’s fine. Nobody should be pressured into it.
  • A sale makes the maths work. Occasionally a pre-built with good components is priced competitively during a sale event.
  • Laptop. Obviously — there’s no self-build option.

The middle option nobody mentions

Most specialist retailers and local shops in India will assemble a parts list you specify for a modest fee, typically ₹1,500–₹3,000.

You choose every component. They build and test it. You get retail warranties on each part, plus someone to blame if the assembly is wrong.

For most people asking this question, this is the correct answer. It removes the part people are worried about — the assembly — while keeping every advantage of choosing your own parts.

The upgrade argument

A self-build is a machine you understand. When something fails in three years, you know what it is and how to replace it.

Some pre-builts use proprietary parts — non-standard motherboards, unusual PSU form factors, cases that only fit their own components. Those are effectively disposable. Ask whether the parts are standard ATX before buying.

What self-building actually involves

Less than people fear. The parts fit one way, nothing needs force, and the whole thing takes two to four hours the first time.

The genuinely hard part isn’t assembly, it’s part selection — making sure everything is compatible and correctly sized. That’s what the PC builder is for: socket, memory generation, clearances and power draw all get checked automatically.

Read the common mistakes before you start and you’ll avoid essentially all of the usual problems.

The comparison worth doing

Before buying any pre-built, put its exact specification into the PC builder and see what the parts cost.

If the pre-built is within about 10% and the components are good, it’s a reasonable deal. If it’s 25% more and the PSU is unbranded, you now know exactly what you’re paying for.


Bottom line: the savings from self-building are real but come mostly from parts you can’t see — PSU, case, memory configuration. Ask the five questions before buying pre-built, and consider having a shop assemble your own parts list, which is the best option for most people.
