A Gen 5 drive is three times faster on paper and identical in games. Where storage speed matters and where it's marketing.

Storage is the component with the biggest gap between headline numbers and perceptible difference. Here’s what the numbers mean and which ones to pay for.

The tiers

The pattern is the important part: the only jump you genuinely feel is the first one. Hard drive to any SSD is transformative. Everything after that is a benchmark number.

Why game load times barely improve

Game loading is rarely bottlenecked by sequential read speed. It’s bottlenecked by decompression, shader compilation and asset processing — all CPU work.

That’s why a Gen 5 drive loads a game maybe half a second faster than a Gen 3 one. The drive was never the limit.

Direct storage APIs that move decompression to the GPU change this in theory, and adoption has been slow enough that it doesn’t yet change buying advice.

What actually matters instead

Capacity. Games are enormous. A 500GB drive holds surprisingly few modern installs — the storage planner will show you how few.

Sustained write speed. Cheap drives use a fast cache and then collapse when it’s exhausted. Copying 200GB reveals this instantly; benchmarks that write 1GB don’t. Relevant if you record video or move large files.

DRAM cache. DRAM-less drives are cheaper and slower at sustained random operations. Fine as a games drive, less good as a boot drive.

Endurance (TBW). Mostly irrelevant for gaming. You will not write enough data to wear out a modern drive in its useful life.

The 2026 pricing situation

NAND is in its own shortage — SSDs are up 30–50% since mid-2024 for the same reasons memory is up. See the shortage explainer.

Practical consequence: the cost-per-gigabyte advantage of bigger drives has narrowed, and a sensible strategy has changed shape.

A good approach right now: one 1TB NVMe for the OS and current games, plus a cheap SATA SSD or a hard drive for archives, recordings and games you’re not actively playing.

Two drives at 1TB each frequently cost less than one 2TB drive, and the second one doesn’t need to be fast.

Heat

Gen 5 drives run genuinely hot and require a heatsink. Many motherboards include one; check yours before buying a drive with its own, since they can conflict.

Gen 4 and below rarely need active thought unless the drive sits directly under the graphics card, which is a common and poorly-ventilated position.

Keep 15% free

SSD write performance degrades sharply when the drive is nearly full, because the controller runs out of free blocks.

A drive at 98% capacity can be dramatically slower than the same drive at 70%. This shows up as longer load times and texture streaming hitches, and people usually blame the game.

What to buy

Boot and games drive: 1TB NVMe Gen 4 with DRAM, from a known brand. This is the sweet spot and has been for a while.

Second drive: 1–2TB SATA SSD, or a hard drive if you’re archiving video. Cheapest per gigabyte.

Skip: Gen 5 unless you have a specific professional workload. You’re paying a premium and adding heat for a benchmark number.

Also skip: the very cheapest DRAM-less QLC drives as a boot drive. Fine as secondary storage, frustrating as your primary.

Check the M.2 slots first

Motherboards have a limited number of M.2 slots, and they’re not all equal — some run at Gen 3 speeds, some share bandwidth with a PCIe slot or with SATA ports, which can disable them.

The manual has a table. Read it before buying a second drive and discovering that installing it turns off two SATA ports.

The PC builder lists the M.2 slot count for each board, which is the number to check against your plans.


Bottom line: any SSD over a hard drive is the only jump you feel. Buy 1TB Gen 4 with DRAM as your main drive, add a cheap second drive for bulk, keep 15% free, and don’t pay for Gen 5 to play games.
