Why RAM Costs Three Times What It Did: The 2026 Shortage
A 32GB DDR5 kit was ₹12,000 in 2024 and is ₹40,000 now. Here's what happened, whether to wait, and how to build around it.
If you priced a PC build in 2024 and are pricing one again now, the memory line is the one that makes you re-check the page. It isn’t a mistake.
What actually happened
Three things stacked on top of each other:
AI datacentre demand. Training and inference hardware consumes enormous quantities of DRAM, and it consumes the same fab capacity that consumer memory comes from. Datacentre buyers sign long contracts at high volumes, so manufacturers allocate wafers there first.
Deliberate capacity restraint. After the 2022–23 memory glut destroyed margins, manufacturers cut output. That discipline held into a demand spike, which is the textbook recipe for a price shock.
Currency and duty on top. In India specifically, rupee weakness against the dollar and import costs add a layer on top of the global price.
The result: DDR5 roughly doubled, DDR4 roughly tripled. DDR4 got hit harder because production lines were being wound down as demand was supposed to fall.
What it means for a build right now
The practical consequences are strange and worth planning around.
16GB is defensible again
For a couple of years the standard advice was “just get 32GB”. At current pricing, the jump from 16GB to 32GB on DDR5 can cost more than a full graphics card tier.
For pure gaming at 1080p and 1440p, 16GB in dual channel still works. Spending that difference on the GPU produces more frames. If you edit video, stream while playing, or run a lot of browser tabs alongside a game, 32GB is still worth it — but it’s now a real trade-off rather than an automatic yes.
DDR4 is no longer the cheap option
The old advice — go AM4 or LGA1700 with DDR4 to save money — is much weaker now. DDR4 tripling means the platform saving mostly evaporates, and you end up on a dead socket for it.
If you’re buying new in 2026 and the budget stretches at all, AM5 with DDR5 is the better call, because at least the socket has a future.
Never buy a single stick
This was always true and it matters more now. A single stick runs single-channel and costs you 10–20% of your frame rate in CPU-bound games.
The temptation when memory is expensive is to buy one 16GB stick now and another later. Don’t. Two 8GB sticks beat one 16GB stick for gaming today, and matched kits are tested to run together — buying the same model six months later is not a guarantee of a matched pair.
Should you wait?
Honest answer: probably not, unless you can wait a long time.
Analysts don’t expect meaningful relief before late 2026 at the earliest, and recovery is projected as gradual rather than a crash back to old prices. Fab capacity takes years to add, and AI demand isn’t projected to fall.
Waiting six months to save a hypothetical 10% on one component, while GPU prices also drift upward, is not obviously a win. If you need a machine, build it.
How to build around it
A few practical adjustments:
- Buy exactly the memory you need, not the memory you might need in three years. Adding later is normally bad advice; at these prices it’s reasonable.
- Prioritise dual channel over capacity. 2×8GB beats 1×16GB.
- Don’t chase speed. DDR5-6000 CL30 is the sweet spot on AM5. Faster kits cost disproportionately more for a few percent.
- Check the used market carefully. Memory is one of the few components where used is relatively low-risk — it either works or it doesn’t, and it fails early if it’s going to.
- Reconsider your storage plan too. NAND is in its own squeeze, up 30–50% since mid-2024. A 1TB drive plus a cheap SATA drive for archives may beat one 2TB NVMe.
Run the numbers yourself
The PC builder prices all of this at current India retail and will show you the actual trade-off — swap between a 16GB and a 32GB kit and watch what happens to the graphics card you can afford, and to the estimated frame rate.
That comparison is more useful than any general rule, because it depends entirely on your budget.
Bottom line: memory prices are a supply story that isn’t resolving soon. Build now if you need to, buy dual-channel at the capacity you actually need, and treat 32GB as a considered choice rather than a default.
