AM4 or AM5 in 2026? The Socket Decision
AM4 is cheap and finished. AM5 costs more and has years left. The DDR4 price spike changed which one is actually the bargain.
For three years the answer was easy: buy AM4 if you’re on a budget, AM5 if you’re not. The memory shortage broke that rule.
What each platform is
AM4 launched in 2017 and ran through five generations of Ryzen. It’s DDR4 only, PCIe 4.0 at best, and its final chip is the 5700X3D. Nothing new is coming.
AM5 is DDR5 only, PCIe 5.0 capable, and AMD has committed to supporting it well beyond 2027. It’s the socket with a future.
The old argument, and why it broke
The AM4 case used to be: the board is cheaper, the CPU is cheaper, and DDR4 is much cheaper. Stack those and you saved enough for a better graphics card.
Two of those three still hold. The third — cheap DDR4 — is gone. DDR4 tripled in the 2026 shortage, harder than DDR5 doubled, because production was being wound down precisely as demand held up.
So the platform saving has compressed to the board and the chip, and you’re paying near-DDR5 prices for memory on a dead socket.
When AM4 still makes sense
It’s not dead as a value option. Buy AM4 if:
- Your total budget is genuinely tight — under about ₹55,000, where every ₹3,000 changes which GPU you can afford
- You’re upgrading an existing AM4 machine — dropping a 5700X3D into a board you already own is one of the best value upgrades in PC gaming, full stop
- You found a good used or clearance bundle — board and chip together at a real discount
That middle case is the strongest one. If you already have the board and memory, AM4 is excellent. It’s buying a new AM4 platform that’s now questionable.
When AM5 is the answer
- You’re building new and can reach it
- You want to upgrade the CPU later without replacing the board and memory
- You want PCIe 5.0 storage or a modern chipset feature set
- You’re buying an X3D chip for high-refresh competitive gaming
The last one matters if you play CS2 or Valorant at 240Hz. The current X3D parts are the fastest gaming CPUs available, and they only exist on AM5 going forward.
The upgrade-path argument, examined honestly
“AM5 lets you upgrade later” is true, and it’s also the argument people use to justify overspending.
Be honest with yourself: do you actually upgrade CPUs mid-socket? Many people don’t. They build a machine, use it for five years, and build another one. For that person, socket longevity is worth nothing and the cheaper platform wins.
If you do upgrade — and you’ll know, because you’ve done it before — AM5 pays for itself the first time you drop a new chip in.
What about Intel?
LGA1700 is in the same position as AM4: mature, cheap, finished. LGA1851 is the current socket but has had a shorter roadmap than AM5.
The practical Intel case in 2026 is the same as the AM4 one — a cheap 12th or 13th gen chip on a discounted board is decent value at the low end, particularly since LGA1700 boards can take DDR4, which lets you reuse memory if you already have it.

See it priced
Rather than trusting a table, put both on the PC builder at your actual budget. Build the same target twice — once on AM4, once on AM5 — and compare what graphics card each one leaves room for and what the estimated frame rate does.
At some budgets the AM4 build wins on frames today. At others the platform saving buys nothing. The crossover point moves with memory pricing, which is exactly why a fixed rule isn’t reliable right now.
Bottom line: AM4 is still right for tight budgets and for upgrading a machine you already own. For a new build above about ₹70,000, AM5 is the better buy — the DDR4 price spike removed most of the reason to do otherwise.
