Monitor Buying Guide: Refresh Rate and Response Time
1ms, 360Hz, HDR400. Which of these change how you play and which are marketing? A practical guide to buying a gaming monitor in India.
Monitor spec sheets are the worst-regulated marketing surface in PC hardware. Here’s what each number means and which ones you should actually pay for.
Refresh rate: the one that matters
How many times per second the panel can draw a new image. This is the number worth spending on, and the improvement is not subtle.

The 60 to 144 jump is the one to prioritise. Everything above it is a refinement.
Critically: you need frames to fill it. A 240Hz monitor fed 90 frames is a 90Hz monitor with extra cost. Match the panel to what your machine actually produces — the PC builder will estimate that for your parts.
Response time: mostly fiction
Every panel claims 1ms. The claim is measured under a specific transition (usually grey-to-grey with overdrive at maximum) that produces the best possible number and often introduces visible overshoot artefacts.
What you actually care about is whether the panel smears in motion. The only reliable way to know is a review with motion photography — the number on the box tells you nothing.
Practical guidance: any modern IPS panel from a known brand is fine. VA panels have historically smeared in dark transitions. OLED is genuinely instant.
Panel type
IPS — good colour, good viewing angles, decent speed. The default correct choice for most people.
VA — better contrast and deeper blacks, historically slower in dark scenes. Improving, but check reviews for smearing.
TN — fastest and cheapest, poor colour and angles. Still used in some competitive-focused panels; hard to recommend otherwise now.
OLED — perfect blacks, instant response, best motion clarity available. Expensive, and burn-in remains a consideration for static HUD elements over years of use.
Resolution: pick with your GPU, not your eyes
1440p looks better than 1080p. It also costs roughly 78% more pixels to render.
- 1080p — correct for competitive play and for mid-range hardware
- 1440p — the sweet spot if your GPU can feed it at your target refresh
- 4K — beautiful, extremely demanding, and at 27“ the pixel density gain over 1440p is smaller than people expect
Buying a 1440p 240Hz panel with a card that produces 90fps at 1440p is a common and expensive mistake.
Adaptive sync
FreeSync and G-Sync eliminate tearing by matching the panel’s refresh to your frame rate. Genuinely useful, and near-universal now.
Two things to know: most FreeSync panels work fine with NVIDIA cards (“G-Sync Compatible”), and adaptive sync matters most when your frame rate is below your refresh rate — which is exactly when you need it.
HDR: check the tier or ignore it
“HDR” on a budget monitor usually means the panel accepts an HDR signal, not that it can display one meaningfully.
- HDR400 — effectively a marketing badge. Often looks worse than SDR.
- HDR600 — starting to be real
- HDR1000 / true local dimming / OLED — actual HDR
If the spec sheet says HDR400 and nothing else, treat the monitor as an SDR monitor and don’t pay extra for it.
Size and distance
At typical desk distance:
- 24“ — 1080p. Everything is in your field of view without moving your head, which is why competitive players still use this size.
- 27“ — 1440p. The most common sweet spot.
- 32“ — 1440p is noticeably less sharp at this size; prefer 4K.
Bigger is not automatically better for competitive play. Tracking targets across a 32“ panel requires more head movement than across a 24“.
What to buy, by budget

One thing people forget
A monitor outlives three graphics cards. It’s the component you should be most willing to over-buy slightly, because you’ll grow into it — the opposite of the advice for everything else in the build.
Bottom line: refresh rate is the number worth paying for and 144Hz is the big jump. Ignore response time claims and HDR400. Match resolution to what your GPU actually produces, and buy the monitor slightly ahead of your current hardware.
