Every settings video tells you to change forty things. In practice, a handful affect how you actually play and the rest is noise that makes you feel productive without improving anything.

Here’s the short list, with the reasoning.

Sensitivity: find your eDPI, then stop

The number that matters isn’t your in-game sens — it’s eDPI, your DPI multiplied by sensitivity. A player on 400 DPI × 2.0 and one on 800 DPI × 1.0 both sit at 800 eDPI and have identical aim speed.

Most pros land in the 800–1600 eDPI range, and a sensible starting point is 700–1000. Lower gives more precision but demands more mousepad and more arm.

Three rules:

  • Adjust in small steps — even 0.1 is noticeable
  • Change it once, then leave it alone for two weeks
  • Consistency beats optimality. A mediocre sens you have muscle memory on will outperform a perfect sens you switched to yesterday

The metric nobody uses but should

cm/360 is the distance your mouse travels for a full 360° turn. Unlike eDPI, it compares across different games, because it accounts for each game’s yaw value.

cm/360 = (360 × 2.54) / (DPI × sens × yaw)

Rough bands:

cm/360 Style
under 15cm Very high — wrist only
15–25cm High — wrist/arm hybrid, good tracking
25–35cm Medium — balanced
35–50cm Low — arm aiming, most common among pros
over 50cm Very low — full arm, max precision

Crosshair

A crosshair tells you where bullets go. That’s the entire job.

Keep it small enough to see an enemy behind it, and bright enough to read against light walls — this is the setting most worth spending time on, since it directly determines where you shoot. Static only: dynamic expansion animates but teaches you nothing.

The settings that actually buy you frames

If frames dip below your refresh rate during smokes or utility spam:

Target at least double your refresh rate in frames. Headroom is what stops the dips that get you killed.

Audio

The most underrated setting in the game. Footstep direction wins more rounds than crosshair placement does.

Use headphones. Disable any “enhancement” or spatial processing your driver adds — it muddies the positional cues you need. Drop music volume to near zero in competitive.

Mechanics beat settings

Here’s the thing no config change fixes: accuracy requires stopping completely before you shoot.

Counter-strafing is how you stop instantly. Moving left with A, tap D briefly, then shoot — the counter-input kills your momentum and restores full accuracy. Same in reverse.

You can have perfect settings and still lose every duel if you’re shooting while drifting.

A training routine that works

30–40 minutes, and consistency matters far more than total hours:

  • 10 min Aim Botz — headshots only
  • 10 min deathmatch
  • 5 min recoil control
  • 5 min prefire practice on one map

What to skip entirely

Viewmodel tweaks, custom HUD colours, anything cosmetic. They feel like progress and change nothing about your results.


Bottom line: set sensitivity, crosshair and audio properly, turn off V-Sync and mouse acceleration, learn to counter-strafe, then go play. Config tinkering is the most comfortable way to avoid practising.
