Counter-Strafing: Why Your Shots Miss While Moving
In CS2 and Valorant bullets only land when you are still. Counter-strafing stops you instantly — and it is a five-minute skill.
You line up a perfect shot, click, and the bullet goes somewhere else. Then you watch the killcam and the enemy did the same thing to you and hit.
The difference is almost never aim. It’s whether the player was actually stationary at the moment of the click.
The accuracy penalty is brutal
Tactical shooters apply a movement inaccuracy multiplier. While you’re moving above a walking threshold, your first bullet lands in a cone rather than at your crosshair. At full sprint that cone is wide enough that a headshot at mid-range is essentially a coin flip.
Crucially: the penalty doesn’t clear the instant you release the key. You decelerate over a short window, and until you’re below the threshold, you’re still shooting the cone.
Counter-strafing removes that window.
The input
Moving right with D? Tap A. Moving left with A? Tap D.
That’s it. The opposite input cancels your momentum almost immediately instead of letting you coast to a stop.
Moving right: D (held) → tap A → shoot
Moving left: A (held) → tap D → shoot
Moving forward: W (held) → tap S → shoot
The tap is short — you’re cancelling momentum, not walking the other way. Hold it too long and you start moving left, which is the same problem mirrored.
The timing that trips people up
The order is: counter-input, then click. Not simultaneously.
There’s a tiny gap — a handful of milliseconds — between the counter-input landing and your accuracy resetting. Clicking at the same instant as the tap means you fire during that gap and the shot still spreads.
If your counter-strafes feel unreliable, this is almost always why. Slow down by a hair and the hit rate jumps.
Practising it properly
Do this in an empty server with a wall:
- Strafe right, counter-strafe, fire one bullet at a specific spot on the wall
- Strafe left, counter-strafe, fire one bullet at the same spot
- Repeat until both directions land in the same place
Watch the bullet holes, not your feeling. If the right-strafe holes cluster tighter than the left-strafe ones, your non-dominant direction needs more reps — which is extremely common and worth fixing deliberately.
Five minutes a day for a week is enough to make it automatic.
When not to counter-strafe
Counter-strafing stops you, and stopping makes you a stationary target. It’s the right move when:
- You’re taking a duel you expect to win in one or two bullets
- You’re holding an angle and someone appears
- You’re peeking a known position
It’s the wrong move when:
- You’re crossing open ground under fire — keep moving, don’t stop to trade
- You’re repositioning after a lost fight
- You’re strafing to dodge a sniper
The skill isn’t “always counter-strafe”. It’s knowing that you have to be still to hit, and choosing when that trade is worth it.
The related habit: don’t spray while walking
Once you understand the accuracy model, spraying makes more sense too. The first bullet is the accurate one; subsequent bullets climb a predictable pattern. If you were moving when the first bullet left, the whole spray is built on a wrong starting point.
Stop, first bullet, then control the pattern.
Movement in Valorant differs slightly
The principle is identical but the deceleration profile isn’t. Valorant’s stopping window is a little more forgiving, and its weapons punish sustained sprays harder. The practical result is the same: tap the opposite key, wait a beat, shoot.
Bottom line: you cannot hit what you’re aiming at while moving. Tap the opposite direction, let the momentum die, then click. Five minutes of wall practice a day and it stops being a thing you think about.
