Spray Control: Learning One Pattern Properly
Recoil isn't random. It's a fixed path your weapon walks every time. Learn one weapon's path instead of half-learning four.
Recoil in tactical shooters is deterministic. The same weapon fired from the same spot walks the same path every single time, with only a small random spread layered on top.
That means spray control is not a reflex. It’s a memorised movement.
Why most people never learn it
They practise four weapons at once, get 30% good at each, and conclude spraying is unreliable. Then they go back to tapping and cap their own damage output in close fights.
Pick one weapon. The rifle you buy in 80% of rounds. Learn its pattern completely. Add a second only when the first is automatic.
The shape
Nearly every automatic rifle follows the same three-phase structure:

The chaos phase is the important one. Past roughly 15 bullets you are spending ammunition to no purpose. Release, let the gun reset, fire again.
The drill
Empty server, a flat wall, stand about 10 metres back.
- Fire a full magazine while trying to hold the crosshair on one dot
- Look at the pattern you drew on the wall — that is your uncorrected recoil
- Fire again, this time pulling your mouse along the inverse of that shape
- Repeat until the holes cluster instead of forming a line
You are literally tracing the pattern backwards. When you can keep 20 bullets inside a head-sized area at 10 metres, you have it.
Ten minutes a day. Two weeks. It sticks permanently after that — it’s motor memory, like a keyboard shortcut.
Burst length by distance
Full sprays are for close range only. The practical rule:
- Under 10m — spray freely, the pattern barely matters
- 10–20m — 5 to 7 bullet bursts, reset between
- 20–30m — 2 to 3 bullet bursts
- Over 30m — single taps, wait for full reset
The reset time between bursts is short but real. Firing again too early continues the old pattern instead of starting a new one, which is why “burst” spam at range feels as inaccurate as spraying.
Spray transfers
Once the pattern is memorised, you get a bonus: you can move an active spray from one enemy to the next without stopping.
The trick is that you’re moving your aim while continuing to compensate for recoil. Two simultaneous movements. It feels impossible until the compensation is automatic — which is the whole reason to learn one pattern to the point of boredom.
This is how one player kills three stacked enemies through a smoke. Not aim. Pattern memory plus a horizontal drag.
What about sensitivity?
Very high sensitivity makes spray control materially harder, because the compensation movement becomes tiny and imprecise. If you’re above roughly 1600 eDPI and struggling, that’s a contributing factor.

The honest limitation
Spray control wins close and mid-range fights. It does nothing for you if:
- Your crosshair placement puts you 40° off target when the fight starts
- You’re moving when you fire the first bullet
- You’re spraying at 40 metres because it feels aggressive
Fix placement and counter-strafing first. Spray control is the third layer, and it’s the one that turns even fights into won fights.
Bottom line: one weapon, ten minutes a day, trace the inverse of the pattern until 20 bullets fit in a small circle. Stop at 15 bullets. Everything else about spraying is downstream of that.
