Positional audio wins rounds. Spatial processing usually makes it worse. What to buy and what to switch off.

Gaming Headset or Headphones and a Mic?

Audio is the most underrated competitive advantage in shooters and the most marketing-saturated category in gaming gear.

Why positional audio matters so much

In a tactical shooter you can see maybe 100° of the world. Audio covers the other 260°.

Footsteps tell you direction, distance, surface and count. Reloads tell you someone is briefly vulnerable. A door tells you a rotation is happening. All of that is free information, and most players are throwing away half of it through bad hardware or bad settings.

The single most important setting

Turn off every “surround” and “spatial” enhancement your headset software offers.

Virtual 7.1 works by applying processing to a stereo signal to simulate more speakers. In practice, it smears the timing and frequency cues your brain actually uses to localise sound.

Stereo, unprocessed, on a decent pair of drivers, gives better directional accuracy than almost any virtual surround mode. Game engines already do the positional work — the headset re-processing it is interference, not enhancement.

Same for “bass boost” and any EQ preset called something like “FPS Mode”. Boosted bass masks the mid and high frequencies that footsteps live in.

Headset or headphones plus a microphone?

Headset — one purchase, microphone included, simpler. Audio quality per rupee is lower because the budget is split.

Headphones + separate mic — better sound for the money and better microphone quality, at higher total cost and desk clutter.

The honest breakdown:

  • Under ₹6,000 — buy a headset. A separate setup at this budget compromises both halves.
  • ₹6,000–12,000 — either works. Headset for convenience, split for quality.
  • Above ₹12,000 — headphones plus a USB microphone wins clearly, especially if you record or stream.

Closed-back, for gaming

Closed-back isolates you from room noise and doesn’t leak. Correct for gaming, essential if anyone else is in the room, and necessary if you have a microphone that would otherwise pick up your own game audio.

Open-back has a wider, more natural soundstage and some players prefer it for positional accuracy. It also leaks sound in both directions — useless in a noisy room, and a problem if you stream.

Default to closed-back unless you have a quiet room to yourself.

Wireless

Fine now, with one caveat: use the dedicated 2.4GHz dongle, not Bluetooth.

Bluetooth adds tens of milliseconds of latency and typically uses a lower-quality codec. For watching video it’s fine. For hearing a footstep and reacting, it isn’t.

What matters in the specs

Very little, honestly. The measurable specs printed on boxes — frequency response range, driver diameter, impedance — correlate poorly with how a headset actually sounds.

What matters:

  • Comfort. You’ll wear it for hours. Clamping force and earcup size matter more than any driver spec.
  • Closed-back isolation.
  • A microphone that isn’t terrible, if it’s a headset.
  • Replaceable earpads. Pads wear out in a year or two; a headset with non-replaceable pads has a short life.

That last one is the most overlooked and the biggest determinant of how long the purchase lasts.

In-game audio settings

Beyond hardware:

  • Set the audio output profile to headphones, not speakers. Games mix differently for each.
  • Drop music volume in competitive modes to near zero.
  • Raise effects volume relative to voice chat.
  • If the game offers a dynamic range option, choose the narrow / “night mode” setting — it compresses loud sounds so quiet ones like footsteps are more audible.

That last setting is genuinely a competitive advantage and almost nobody uses it.

The training part

Good hardware doesn’t automatically translate to good information. You have to learn what your game’s sounds mean.

Spend one session in a private match walking on different surfaces, listening to your own footsteps at different distances. Learn what “one floor above” sounds like versus “same floor, behind a wall”. It’s twenty minutes and it changes how much of the map you can hear.


Bottom line: closed-back, stereo, all spatial processing off, dedicated dongle if wireless, replaceable earpads. Then spend twenty minutes learning what your game’s footsteps actually sound like.
